Crazy Bread Clone

Crazy bread girl

The above image was the third image that came up when I searched for ‘crazy bread’ on Google. That little girl does look a bit too excited for bread.

My kids love Little Caesar’s Crazy Bread. It’s so bad that when we want to get pizza, they only want to eat Little Caesar’s Crazy Bread. Now, I like getting pizza from the local pizza joints and I don’t want to drive 10 miles just for some breadsticks (they tried and didn’t like the bread sticks from the local pizza shops) so I went online in search of a way to replicate the beloved Crazy Bread in our own oven.

It was an accident that I came up with the recipe for the breadstick dough. I was making up a batch of dinner roll dough in our Breadman Pro Bread Machine (read all about my love of this bread machine here) and left out the egg. I knew the dough wouldn’t make good rolls, but thought that breadsticks might be a possibility.

Turns out, I was right. So here is the recipe for making your own Crazy Bread clone.

Dough:
[for 2lb. bread machine]

  • 1-1/3 Cups Water
  • 1/4 Cup Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 2 tsp. Salt
  • 4 Cups Bread Flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp. Dry Yeast

Select DOUGH cycle. Once dough is done, place on lightly floured surface. Roll it out and cut it into strips.

Place on greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.

While the breadsticks are baking you can make up the topping for them and the sauce.

Breadstick Topping:

  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • Parmesan cheese

Melt the butter and stir in the garlic salt. Once the breadsticks are done baking, brush on the garlic butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Loco Sauce:

  • 1 15 oz. can tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp. dried marjoram
  • 1/4 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp. dried ground thyme

Mix all of the above in a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Once the sauce starts to bubble, reduce the heat to a simmer for 30 minutes. Stir often.

Enjoy your Crazy Bread breadsticks!
