Today is a cooking day

by admin on September 22, 2008

This morning my four-year-old and I used our apple peeler, slicer, corer and diced up 16 apples to make homemade apple sauce. I didn’t have a recipe at hand and wanted to try my luck at creating one for the crockpot since it was such a large batch.

Here’s the recipe (I tried the end product and it is delicious):

  • 16 peeled and sliced and diced apples
  • 3/4 to 1 Cup of sugar (or whatever your tastebuds appreciate – I like the natural sweetness of the apples to show through so I use less)
  • 2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon (use less or none at all to suit your tastes)

Add the apples, sugar, and cinnamon to the crockpot and cook it on high for 4 hours. I used a wooden spoon to stir and mash up the apples a bit about halfway through the cooking time.

I also have a loaf of my grandfather’s recipe for Honey Oatmeal bread. I love breadmaker machines! They are a lifesaver for doing something that I otherwise probably would not even attempt. Nothing tastes as good as warm homemade bread with a thick slab of butter happily melting on top of it. Plus, I can make a loaf of bread for $.45 or so versus $3 or more for a mass manufactured, preservative filled, loaf from the store.

I’ll post the Honey Oatmeal bread recipe later this week for those who might be interested.
