Gearing up for the 2009 gardening season

by admin on March 24, 2009

Well, our seeds finally arrived last week and we’ve been getting them started. I’m going to try and keep a garden journal of sorts here throughout the season from now (starting seeds) through the various harvest periods. I want to keep track of things such as when things were planted, rainfall amounts, when different items were picked, as well as the amount of produce our little garden produces.

The Box Car Willie heirloom tomato seeds that were started last Friday have begun to sprout which has greatly excited the kids. They kept checking them throughout the afternoon on the day we planted them hoping to actually watch them grow. I’m still waiting on our onion sets and seed potatoes to arrive although I suspect they will be shipped just in time for planting.

My only big debate right now is whether or not to start our lettuce. I don’t want to plant it too early and have a frost damage it, but I don’t want to wait too long and have it be too warm either. I’m also hoping to plant and harvest the lettuce and subsequently use the space to plant other yummy veggies. We’ll see how that goes.
