Had to plant my cucumbers a bit early

by admin on May 13, 2009

Well, I screwed up and started my cucumber seeds a bit too early this year. They were close to being root-bound in their peat pots and they had blossoms forming as well. I made an executive decision to plant them as soon as I could.

First, I hardened them off for a few days by placing them outside during the day. I then filled up my water-filled insulating teepees and let them warm up rather nicely in the beautiful sunshine we had last week. I prepped the soil, planted the cucumbers, and placed the insulating teepees over them.

So far, the results are promising. Even with the spotty frost that folks saw around here a couple of nights this week the cucumber plants appear to be thriving. Hopefully, I will be able to take the insulating teepees off of them before too long as I need to get my tomatoes planted soon.

That’s the trials of growing a garden from seeds I guess. It’s fun though and this is why I keep a record of when I start seeds, plant, and harvest. When I have enough years of records compiled I should be able to refine my timing and techniques for better results in the garden.

Happy Gardening!!
