The Grasshopper and the Ants

by admin on September 3, 2014

The calendar has flipped over to September and the long range weather forecast shows fewer and fewer days in the 80s. It got me thinking about fall and winter and the cold that comes with those changing seasons. We had a long, cold, and snowy winter this year and I am nowhere near ready to go through it again (well, mentally at least).

They’re beginning to harvest the seed corn around here and I noticed that the soybeans are just beginning to turn a brilliant yellow. Just when it finally got warm enough for our tomato plants to finally take off . . . the garden is beginning to wind down.

All of this makes me think of the fable of the Grasshopper and the Ants which reminded me of the Disney Silly Symphony version below. I remember watching this as a kid and not thinking much about it. But as an adult, the pages of the calendar quickly flip by and I am reminded that there is no time like the present to prepare for the winter.

Can’t always depend on others to help you out when you fail to prepare, right?

This summer we have frozen pounds of blueberries and sweet corn and my wife made a bunch of strawberry freezer jam. Soon, we’ll be making quart after quart of apple sauce and put that in the freezer as well. They will keep our side of beef company and help make tasty meals all fall and winter.

It’s time to finish up all of my outdoor projects and button everything up for the long winter ahead. There will be plenty of time for relaxing indoors before too long :).
