For the 100th post, a goal of fitness

Okay, I can’t believe it took me over a year to get 100 posts on this blog. Seriously, that’s an average of less than 2 per week. Well, I plan on being much better for year two of Back Porch View.

I also plan to be much better health-wise. Starting today I have a modest goal of walking a mere 1 mile per day 5 days a week. I just completed my mile for today and walked an average speed of 3.5 m.p.h. while burning 129 calories and 40 fat calories (I have no idea what the difference is, but that’s what my treadmill told me) in just under 17 minutes. After a two week period of walking 1 mile per day I plan to increase the distance by a half mile per day each week and at my own discretion increase the speed I walk/run.

Where it goes from here, I don’t know. I just know that, today, I was tired of feeling tired and sluggish and had this treadmill collecting dust in our basement and mocking me (more than my wife mocks me about having a treadmill in the basement collecting dust, but I digress) so I did something about it. I dusted it off, turned it on (yay! it still works!), and started walking. No excuses – I want to be in better shape.

I’ll try posting a weekly recap to hold myself accountable for my goals. In the past, I have always set my goals too high and after missing a day or two it snowballs into the treadmill collecting dust. I’m taking it one day at a time this go-around.
