Beautiful late summer weekend of fun

by admin on September 14, 2009

We visited the local harvest festival in downtown Constantine on Saturday. The kids had a great time looking at all of the booths and my daughter bought a princess crown with some of her money. My son spent $1 for the chance to dunk one of the volunteer firefighters. The gal running the booth said he could have more than the allotted three chances because he was so young. His first two tosses were right on the money and he ended up dunking the guy three times before I could cut him off.

There were lots of inflatables to play in such as a jumper (not sure what else you call those big things that kids jump around in), climbing wall, and boxing ring. We missed our favorite farmers market vendor so we drove on over to Crooked Creek Farms after leaving the festival. We stocked up on potatoes, heirloom tomatoes, and green peppers. I think the kids’ favorite part was the two farm cats that were more than happy to lay by them and get loads of attention heaped upon themselves.

We got back in the truck and by this time we were all a bit thirsty and my son asked for some apple cider. I thought that sounded like a great idea so we headed on down to Middlebury, Indiana to a little cider mill we had heard about from a friend at church. It was a gorgeous drive on a beautiful late summer afternoon.

As luck would have it this was the first weekend that Miller’s Mill was selling fresh apple cider. They had just processed a batch the day before and the sample glass was so tasty, we bought two gallons. Part of the reason it tastes so good is that it is unpasteurized (hard to find unpasteurized cider these days). My son had to have the whole process explained to him by the extremely patient proprietor. She was more than happy to show him how everything worked and answered all of his questions.

He was so excited about it that when we got home he had me help him build a cider mill out of LEGO. It’s not finished just yet, but it looks pretty cool and he’s rather excited about it. If/when we get it finished I’ll have to post photos :).
