Hey Summer! Are you leaving so soon?

by admin on August 25, 2009

We had a brief taste of summer for about the first two weeks in August and now it looks like we won’t really see a string of real hot weather again this year. It sure does feel like summer arrived late and is leaving early. Our garden never really got humming along like it usually does when we have lots of hot and humid weather. Oh, we still have green beans we’re harvesting, the tomatoes and green peppers are coming along, and there are onions & potatoes to harvest.

I was out mowing the yard this morning and already, there is that end of summer smell on the air. An aromatic melange of our pine trees with wafts of goldenrod, Queen Anne’s Lace, and the curing cornfield across the road mingling to create, to me, that signature smell that summer is indeed nearing its end.

One year ago today we went apple picking – I can’t believe it! The Michigan apple crop is a bit later this year due to cooler temps, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we go picking before school starts.

Speaking of school. Just two short weeks and school will be starting here in Michigan. My son will be going all day for the first time and I’m not sure how I’ll adjust to that, but I will. I’m used to having him around most of the day so it will be a big adjustment for both of us. Kids just grow up too fast :).
