My life as a dad

by admin on September 17, 2009

I don’t really own “nice” clothes. The knees of my jeans wear out before they even fade. I have food stains on various shirts and I’m not even a sloppy eater. The only shirts not stained are those that I notice before washing and I treat them with stain lifter.

Just heading out into the backyard is a brand new adventure every day. Sticks turn into plows, magic wands, stop signs, and many other useful items. Rocks, grass, dirt, and leaves can be turned into the most delicious soup. Mud is nature’s Play-Doh. Puddles are meant for splashing or floating leaves and sticks.

At the end of the day, my back is sore and I’m exhausted. I wear a pair of shoes until they fall apart or the tread is worn off. Then they get retired to “work” shoes for yard work and the like.

I play football, LEGOs, pirates, McDonald’s, princess tea time, and many other games all in the same day. My reading list is filled with titles that involve Berenstain Bears, Arthur, Dr. Seuss, and any book involving John Deere or princesses. Favorite shows would be just about anything on PBS such as Arthur, Curious George, Sid the Science Kid, etc.

I eat a steady diet of mac-n-cheese, hotdogs, pancakes, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and snack on cookies, toast, fruit, or yogurt.

Daily conversations are filled with counting nearly everything, naming colors, explaining how this or that works, please & thanks, and answering ‘why?’ countless times. My days are filled with drying tears and lovingly listening to giggles that are more delightful than the most beautiful music ever composed.

On the weekends I rarely need an alarm. I’m awakened by one or both of our beautiful kids.

I Am A Dad.

Isn’t being a parent the most wonderful job? I love it! And I loved staying home with them, too. čÖé
