Where did the time go?

Watching tractors in the field

As a parent, I find myself asking that question after every milestone. Birthdays. The first words. The first time one of our kids walked. The first time they used the potty (although I might have said, “it’s about time,” but I digress). The first day of school.

I was looking for a specific photograph today and stumbled upon a bunch of pictures from when my son was one-year-old.

Where did my little boy go? In the above photo he is watching tractors in the field behind our house. He still loves to watch the tractors work behind our house, but nearly five years have passed from the taking of this photo and it takes the wind out of me to think that those five years have felt more like a mere blink of time.

Last week my not-quite-three-year-old daughter learned how to swing under the tutelage of her older brother. She no longer needs me to give her pushes and that struck me as sad while I watched her smile an accomplished smile of a new skill learned, a new task mastered, one more thing she didn’t need daddy’s help with.

This won’t be the last thing she no longer needs me for. I know this. I’m just afraid that if I blink she will be 17 and asking me to borrow the truck keys – no longer needing me to chauffeur her around.

Where did the time go?
