Things I have purchased in large quantities

by admin on September 2, 2008

I was cleaning the basement over the weekend and came across some things that made me question if it was such a good idea to buy certain things in bulk or ‘jumbo’ sizes. So, just for fun, I thought I would make a list of some of the things I have purchased in bulk over the years that, when looking back, just don’t make a whole lot of sense.

  1. Giant Rolls of Duct Tape – I still have one and a half rolls after purchasing these at least six years ago.
  2. Boxes for my eBay business that I don’t really work on anymore. I think my wife can use them for her Etsy store so eventually they will no longer just take up space on a shelf.
  3. I have at least a half dozen opened tubes of caulk stashed around the house. Whenever I need it, I can’t find it so I go out and purchase another tube only to find the previously opened tubes when I finally locate my caulk gun.
  4. I bought a huge canister of Taco Seasoning about six years ago. Even with using it as chili seasoning I just threw ought the last dregs not too long ago. I love tacos, but evidently not enough to warrant a similar purchase in the future.
  5. Last summer I bought a two or four pound tub of marshmallow cream. I couldn’t believe it was only $4 or so and I love peanut butter and marshmallow cream (fluffernutters) sandwiches. Um, yeah, there’s a reason the smaller 8oz. jars are more popular. I am never going to finish this before it goes bad.

Some things are quite practical to purchase in large quantities (especially when you have kids). Like toilet paper and paper towels. Or coffee. In my opinion you can never have too many different kinds of coffee on hand for that caffeine buzz.

I just don’t get places like Sam’s Club. I’m supposed to pay the store $30 per year for the privilege of purchasing large quantities of stuff for prices that really aren’t all that great? Plus, I have to box my own items after purchase and be subject to a search of my cart as I exit the store to ensure I didn’t somehow manage to shoplift a 30 lb. bucket of butter?

I don’t think so. You can find better deals at Aldi’s, Save-a-lot, and even the store brand items at Meijer.

No price clubs for me.
