The Boxtrolls, a Fun Family Film

The Boxtrolls and Eggs

On a whim, I took the whole family to the movies last Friday. Momma, son (age 10), daughter (age 7), and I went and saw The Boxtrolls.

I went in with zero expectations having only watched a couple of previews on YouTube. What had me intrigued was the fact that it was stop-motion animation (love it!) and a few pics of the sets and characters really looked great.

The Boxtrolls was visually stunning and the animation was superb. While great, a good movie needs more than that. Did The Boxtrolls have a story worth caring about?

Yes, indeed! The premise of the movie is that the Boxtrolls (an underground society that subsist on the upper world’s trash) have been given a bad rap ever since they abducted a baby. Archibald Snatcher submits his exterminating services to the White Hats (ruling society in the town of Cheesebridge) in the hopes that by exterminating all of The Boxtrolls, he too, will become a White Hat.

Eggs, the baby who was abducted, is raised by the Boxtrolls and must come to terms with the reality that he is a boy, not a Boxtroll. While coming to grips with this new reality he is also tasked with saving his Boxtroll friends from the evil clutches of Archibald Snatcher.

The theme of the movie is very reminiscent of ‘Wreck it Ralph’ to me in that the characters are needing to not so much change who they are as much as they need to change how they see themselves and how even the weakest can make brave choices.

The Boxtrolls is based on the book Here Be Monsters! which I will now be buying and reading.

Stay past the first batch of credits for a fun little extra bit!
