Tasty Italian Torpedo Sandwich

by admin on December 2, 2009

I got the ingredients for this sandwich from a rather forgettable book, Wishin’ and Hopin, by Wally Lamb. It was in the new books pile at the library and had a Christmas theme so I picked it up after reading the jacket cover.

While it had some funny moments, it really wasn’t all that good of a book. Set in the 1960s, it was kind of a cross between A Christmas Story and Home Alone with the main character an undersized smart-aleck 5th Grader. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments, but the best part of the book was the idea for the Italian Torpedo sandwich.

I don’t mean to prattle on about the book so lets get to the recipe.

What you need:

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 medium-size onion
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • Pinch of garlic salt
  • Hoagie rolls
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese

Brown the beef and drain off the grease. While the ground beef is cooking dice up the pepper and the onion. Add the can of tomato sauce, diced onion, and diced green pepper. Simmer for 20-30 minutes so the veggies get tender and all of the flavors blend together.

Serve on the hoagie rolls and top with the shredded mozzarella cheese.
